When you hear of mobile games, what kind of games come first to your mind? Puzzle games where you move around candies to blow up the board and word games where you create numerous phrases from a select few letters. Games plagued with horrible, annoying advertisements and games where it feels that you cannot progress without paying a bunch of microtransactions. All of these games flood the app stores, and when I scroll through the shop looking for a new and original game that is not filled to the brim with tiny payments that eventually add up or with advertisements that you are forced to watch after every level for a whole 30 seconds, I just cannot find anything fun. It’s like staring into a brick wall. You just see the same thing again and again, and there is no way to see through the brick wall for something new.
For now, I have given up on finding new games that I am able to call fun. But there is one old game that still interests me. Released by Supercell in 2016, Clash Royale is a game that to this day I am able to enjoy. The game is free, and players do not ever need to watch third-party advertisements for horrible games that are just money grabs. Though microtransactions are offered to players who do not want to struggle for success, progress does not require these boosts. Rather than a simple puzzle or word game, the game is a real-time strategy game where the player competes against an opponent, placing down troops to fight enemies and destroy towers.
I first played this game back in 2016 when I was still in fifth grade. The game was new and took over my grade like a certain virus over the world. Because the game was completely free-to-play and gameplay was uninterrupted by advertisements, I was able to spend a lot of time without feeling bored or tired. Updates were frequent and new troops, spells, and buildings were being added regularly and frequently. Challenges ensured that the player base would not become bored of the same game. Supercell’s Clash Royale was perfect in that the game always felt new despite the fact that it was of course the same game all along.
And now it is 2022. After six years, many may think that Supercell would let Clash Royale rot away and fade out of remembrance. However, the complete opposite is true! Just like before, new troops, spells, and buildings are always being added. There are no times when there is no awesome challenge uniting players globally. Moreover, new economic changes have kept the game playable for those who would rather not pay a cent for games. For these reasons, the game has continued to be perfect for a casual player like me who looks for something new while also not wanting to spend too much money. I myself have been playing for over five years, and the game continues to be as fun for me as it was in the very beginning. And it may be the same for you. If you are also looking for a new game like me, it may be time to revisit Clash Royale rather than waste time on games that are really just money-grabs.
