Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last month, you probably know about Vladimir Putin invading Ukraine. If you want more information about the war, you can check out our article on it: Ukraine-Russia Crisis: Why Does It Mean Full-On War?.
Due to the war, many other activities have been excluding Russia from participating. One of these major events has been the FIDE 2022 Chess Olympiad. This is one of the biggest chess events, and every country would be thrilled to have the chance to host it. Following the beginning of the war, the location had to be moved from Moscow, Russia to Chennai, India, the “Mecca of Chess.”
This seaside city located on the southern tip of India has been home to many famous chess players of all ages. Three players, in particular, stand out from all the rest. Manuel Aaron was the first Indian player to attain the title of International Master. Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu is the fifth youngest grandmaster, second youngest international master, and one of the few people to defeat the current World Champion Magnus Carlsen. And last but not least, Vishwanathan “Vishy” Anand is the ex-world champion and one of the most inspirational chess figures, especially in India.
I personally believe that it is extremely fitting for Chennai to host the Olympiad since Chennai is home to so many amazing chess players in the world, but above all, I am extremely excited about the high-quality chess in the tournament. Many popular chess players will most likely be participating, and it will definitely be one of the biggest chess tournaments of the year.
