How Would You Get Away With Murder?

3, 2, ONE ACTion!!! Scorpion Theatre is back this year with more performances to enjoy. This year, the drama teacher and theatre director started the year on maternity leave. Consequently, her duties fell on the newly elected Drama Council. Personally calling themselves DRACO, the Drama Council took on a massive task. They would be organizing a night of One Acts entitled 3, 2, ONE ACTion. Both One Acts would be murder mystery themed, which coincidentally became the Homecoming theme.

Immediately after school began, they started auditions in August for the fall One Act performances. Much of the organization fell on the two Co-Presidents who also happen to work on the BASIS Bugle. Due to the directors’ absence, these One Acts were chosen to be student directed. Who could possibly direct a performance in highschool? None other than the fabulous Drama Council. Four of them will be directing while one of the presidents will be stage managing and tech directing.

Running auditions was not an easy feat, but the recently formed Drama Council prevailed. The first week of school, they immediately began the show process. The entire Drama Council worked together to create the rehearsal schedule and inform other students about the opportunity to audition. Auditions may have been a stressful time, but DRACO persevered. Each member put in lots of work and time to make sure the auditions remained organized and controlled.

The hardest part of any production is the cast list. Working together, the Drama Council formed two separate cast lists for each One Act. Dealing with bias and personal opinions made it difficult for Drama Council to create these cast lists. Including the fact that many of their own friends had auditioned, Drama Council had to do the hardest thing for any group of human beings to do: remove personal feelings and attitudes towards every student who auditioned. Drama Council were able to successfully act as objective, impartial directors and cast the show.

One of the shows in particular, took the longest to cast. The One Act titledDr had many role changes along the difficult road to a final cast. The two directors worked diligently to decide the best people for each role. Even after rehearsals started, the directors had to yet again recast someone because they were uncomfortable with their role. The marvelous Drama Council directors remained calm and collected while dealing with extremely high pressure situations.

Nevertheless, the directors are excited to create an amazing production. Going along the theme of murder mysteries, the show explains different tactics to carefully not get caught. Each character shows how to execute the individual tactics while the narrators explain the plot lines. Throughout the whole show, the murder victim known as Vic Tim keeps interrupting, upset that he has to play a dead man the whole time. This production is a comedic take on murder and what to do when one finds themself standing over a dead body. What would you do if you were guilty of ending someone’s life? Would you take the fall or try to find a way out of the blame?

No matter what decision you make, there’s always consequences (sometimes unexpected). The performing arts are truly an amazing way to express one’s self. Scorpion Theatre is ready to continue making amazing productions this year and entertaining the student body. Drama Council is ready for any obstacle ahead.
